What are stem cells?
Stem cells are the body’s raw materials, and they are responsible for all of the body’s specialized functions. Under the right conditions in the body or a laboratory, stem cells divide to form more cells, which become either replicated cells or cells with a more specific function, such as blood, brain, heart, muscle, or bone cells.
Stem Cell Therapy
Depending on the patient’s needs, Dr. Lenard may recommend stem cell therapy for back pain, which may help to repair the spinal cord by:
- Replacing the nerve cells in the spinal cord that were killed as a result of the injury
- Regenerating cells that will reconstruct the insulating nerve sheath and stimulate the renewal of damaged axons
- Protecting the cells at the injury site from further damage by soaking up toxins and releasing protective substances
- Preventing spread of the injury by containing the swelling that can occur after injury
Researchers have used various types of stem cells, from a variety of sources, including:
- Brain tissue
- Lining of the nasal cavity
- Tooth pulp
- Embryonic stem cells
In recent studies, the use of these stem cells has led to a partial recovery of spinal cord function, but it is an active area of research that may produce tremendous benefits.
