Spine Surgery Procedures

Here are a few of the spinal surgeries and cutting-edge techniques Dr. Lenard uses:

  • Cervical Laminoplasty

Cervical Laminoplasty is the reshaping and repositioning of bones to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves in the cervical spine (neck). It is commonly performed to treat spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal). Read More

  • Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion

An anterior lumbar interbody fusion is removing of disc or bone material from between two adjacent lumbar (lower back) vertebrae. The space is then bridged with a bone or metal spacer. It is can be performed as an open surgery or using minimally invasive techniques. Read More

  • Lumbar Laminectomy

A lumbar laminectomy is a procedure in which bone is removed from the lower spine. It relieves pressure on the spinal nerve. It is performed to treat pain from pressure on the nerve from lumbar stenosis. Read More

  • PLIF and TLIF

Posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion are two types of spinal fusion procedures that mend the spinal bones together. Both of these procedures are used through an incision in the posterior (back) and are minimally invasive. Read More

  • Balloon Kyphoplasty

A balloon kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to treat vertebral compression fractures (VCF). These fractures are often painful and limit spine mobility, and are commonly caused by osteoporosis, spinal tumors, or traumatic injury. In kyphoplasty, small incisions are made in the back and tiny balloons are inflated next to the fracture in order to push the bones back into place. The bone is then cemented in place in order to strengthen it and to stabilize the fracture. Read More

  • Microdiscectomy

Microdiscectomy, which is also referred to as microlumbar discectomy (MLD), is a procedure performed to relieve pain for patients with a herniated disc. The cause of the pain is the soft gel in the center of the disc leaking out and putting pressure on a nerve root. MLD consists of a minimally invasive removal of the herniated portion of the disc (the jelly) and any broken disc fragments. It is one of the most common surgeries performed by spinal surgeons, if not the most common. Read More

  • Spinal Fusion Surgery

A spinal fusion is a procedure that involves placing bone graft material between adjacent vertebrae to promote bone growth that joins together, or “fuses” the two structures. The procedure can be performed using minimally invasive surgical techniques in some cases. Read More

  • XLIF

Extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF) is an approach to spinal fusion in which the surgeon accesses the discs between vertebrae and fuses the lumbar (lower spine) using a surgical approach from the side of the body, rather than the front or back. Read More

  • Posterior Cervical Foraminotomy

A posterior cervical foraminotomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to relieve the symptoms of a pinched nerve in the cervical spine (neck). A posterior cervical foraminotomy enlarges the neural foramen around a pinched nerve. The neural foramen is the opening through which a nerve root exits the spine. Read More

  • Posterior Cervical Fusion

Posterior cervical fusion is a procedure that allows two or more vertebrae (bones) in the cervical spine (neck) to grow together into one solid bone. It is done through an incision in the back of the neck. A bone graft is attached to allow the vertebrae to fuse together. Read More

  • Cervical Laminectomy and Fusion

A cervical laminectomy and fusion is a procedure to make the spinal canal larger by removing the spinous process (bony projection on the back of a vertebra) and lamina (bony arch on either side of the spinous process). Read More

  • Stem Cell Therapy for Back Pain

Stem cell therapy is a treatment that can be used for severe spinal cord injuries that result in damage to nerve cells in the spine. Stem cells can be used to repair or replace the nerve cells in the spine which were killed as a result of the injury to the spine. Read More

  • Anterior Cervical Corpectomy Spine Surgery

An anterior cervical corpectomy spine surgery and fusion is removal of vertebral bone and spinal disc material. It is performed in order to reduce pressure on the spinal cord and spinal nerves in the cervical spine (neck). Spinal fusion is the placing of bone grafts between the vertebrae to promote bone growth. Read More

  • Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion

An anterior cervical discectomy and fusion is the most common procedure used to treat damaged cervical discs. It relieves pressure on the nerve roots or spinal cord by removing the ruptured disc. A bone graft is then placed in the space previously occupied by the disc. Read More

  • VIA Disc NP

VIA Disc NP is a non-surgical off-the-shelf, processed human nucleus pulposus (NP) allograft intended to supplement degenerated intervertebral discs (IVDs). Read More

What Our Patients Are Saying

Here are a few actual testimonials from Dr. Lenard’s patients.

I had an accident a few months ago, which resulted in a spine fracture. My friends recommended me Dr. Alexander N. Lenard, MD. He thoroughly examined my spine and performed an X-ray as well as MRI scan to find out how much damage was done to my spine. He had to perform spine surgery on me, and took good care of me after the surgery was over. Both he and his staff members were very helpful and had excellent bedside manners. I am recovering fast under his observation. Thanks “Dr. Lenard” for everything that you have done for me!
-Allison Wilson

Dr Lenard’s office was so professional from the moment I made contact. I was treated with the utmost courtesy and respect. I was seen immediately upon request. Dr Lenard spent time with me one on one without ever indicating he was busy or rushed. His demeanor put me at ease instantly. His very proactive staff were an extension of his patience and kindness. There are few doctors I would trust with my spine and my life – having this experience has left me with the confidence that I’m in excellent hands. Thank you Tammy Frances Danielle Richard and Greg for all of your time and service. Thank you Dr Lenard for your honesty & integrity. You clearly possess a great deal of passion for what you do and compassion for whom you serve. Your patients and staff are lucky to be in your presence.

– Dr Jackie Campisi

Before I met Dr Lenard I had been treating with a respectable Orthopedic surgeon but was terrified of back surgery especially after he told me there was only a 30% chance it would help and 70% chance of paralysis.

The pain was horrific, I got to the point of no return and decided to have the surgery. When I told the Orthopedic surgeon that had treated me for six years he told me that he no longer preformed high level surgeries. I was devastated. Panic attack hit me and I was ready to give up.

I got a call from my attorney later that same day, he scheduled an appointment for me with Dr. Lenard for the next morning and two other surgeons later in the week.

I met Dr. Lenard the next morning, I was immediately comforted by his caring demeanor and for the first time wasn’t frightened. Dr Lenard took his time explaining traumatic injuries and that he could fix me. I felt so comfortable with Dr Lenard that I cancelled the other two appointments.

I had the surgery about a month later, and the next day I felt better, I actually got out of the hospital bed and gave him a huge hug.

I am walking today two years later, my quality of life has vastly improved. The scar is perfectly straight. I get compliments about how perfect it looks. I know that sounds silly but it is important especially to a woman.

Dr Lenard saved my life in so many ways physically, mentally and emotionally. Dr Lenard is my HERO and always will be.

– Valerie C Dorsett

My name is Dr. Morgan and I would like to introduce and recommend Dr. Alexander Lenard to you.

Due to a horrific car accident, I needed immediate reconstructive spine surgery. It was questionable whether I might walk again &/or have paralysis.
I was so extremely fortunate that Dr. Lenard was on call as the Chief of Surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital in WPB, where I was taken as a trauma case. He was reassuring and gentle with me that frightening night.

Two shattered vertebral bones had to be removed and titanium rods and spacers were expertly and delicately placed in order to rebuild my spine. The duration of my surgery was over 8 hours.
Remarkably, I was walking the day after surgery and with the assistance of the team at St. Mary’s. I was home in only 2 weekswithout the aid of any walking devices or narcotics!
Dr. Lenard is by far the FINEST spinal surgeon I have ever met both personally and professionally as a former Medical Director for United Healthcare and Metropolitan Life.
He has amazing surgical skills, warm bedside manners, always responsive to a patient’s needs, and has wonderful support staff both in his office and in his Operating Rooms. He even has a great sense of humor, too.

It is my honor and privilege to recommend Dr. Lenard to you if you find that you or a family member are in need of the BEST SPINAL SURGEON in the world!
Wishing you great health,

– Anne Lynn Morgan, M.D.

Dr. Lenard successfully relieved my chronic back pain. Dr. Lenard is a great surgeon. He guided me after spine surgery also that helped me in relieving my post-operative pain. For me he is one of the best.

– Barbara Jane

Dr. Lenard is very passionate and understanding. He provided me with a good understanding of spine surgery. I would like to thank Dr. Lenard for curing my back pain.

Without going into too much unnecessary detail, I was previously under the care of what I thought was a reputable local orthopedist. During which I was treated with physical therapy, drug therapy, injections and epidurals none of which gave me relief for a herniated disk in my lower back. For 6 weeks I could not walk or stand for more than approx. 10 minutes nor sit at all. Deciding to look for a new doctor I started asking around and Dr. Lenard’s name came up multiple times. Unable to work, feeling very frustrated by the ongoing pain and no treatment plan for future relief I decided to email Dr. Lenard on a Saturday afternoon. I was delightfully surprised and hopeful when his assistant Tammy emailed me back right away to let me know that Dr. Lenard would see me the next Monday morning at 9am. Needless to say I feel blessed to have found Dr. Lenard. He assessed me, scheduled me for surgery and 6 weeks post surgery I can even run again. Very seldom in my life have a come across a doctor and team with such compassion and care. Thank you Dr. Lenard, Tammy, Kyle, Lauren and the entire team for all you do for so many people.
