Degenerative disc disease is a very common problem that involves, often the drying out of discs, the collapse of discs and bone spurring. It can be a source of pain in patients that needs to be addressed. It can also be a latent condition that is not a problem, but gets aggravated by some type of traumatic event, and then all of a sudden somebody who had degenerative disease without a problem has a serious problem. So it needs to be recognized when it occurs by the surgeon so that he or she can take it into account when treating the patient’s condition.
